Spotlight On: Yuya Hidekazu

He doesn't even get to pass Go or collect $200...

Yuya Hidekazu is an up-and-coming new mangaka who won Kadokawa’s “New Artist Encouragement Award” for 2011. He got a couple of one shots published in Young Ace, in October and January.

I quite like the art style, and it’ll be interesting to see what his first full series will be like.

Anyway, we have The Warashiki Zawarashiki, the longer of the two stories. It involves a guy who wants to leave his old, drafty housing (did I mention it’s winter?). Much to his surprise, the house’s resident hikikomori Zashiki Warashi tries to stop him. Afraid of what will happen to her when the house’s sole tenant moves out and the subsequent demolition, she pleads with him to stay. Too bad she’s a bit of a klutz…

Our other short from Mr. Hidekazu is Jigomezuki!, or Hell Mezuki, if that’s your preference. After Mezuki, a demon specializing in starting fires, accidentally burning down the Lord of the Underworld’s palace, she is demoted and reassigned to Earth to watch for humanity’s sins. She finds one particularly evil-looking person and follows him around…and what happens is a touching story of redemption. This release also happens to mark the translating debut of longtime proofreader IO. Applause please.

PS: In my haste to share this all with you, it would appear it has made me late for class.
