The Great Gift Pile (of Manga)

by suimasenscans

This is what your pile of gifts would look like if it were human.

Well, it’s that time of season where everyone gets so busy that they can’t be bothered to make a release post for everything that’s gotten done, so why not get into the spirit of the season and make a giant omnirelease post with all the stuff you wanted to release anyway and treat it as one big present? Surely, you may say, the release post should contain at least one once-in-a-lifetime project to make up for all the trouble, but sadly that isn’t the case. However I think we do have a few cool things that you may enjoy, and they certainly are out of the ordinary. (If you’re here to figure out what the secret project is, just scroll down the page a little ways because I’m going to build this up by making the pile look bigger with ordinary stuff.)

Check under the tree (after the break):

Goodbye Suimasen (omnirelease)

by suimasenscans

Kumeta's next manga: "In Search of Feldspar": normal people go looking for normal minerals.

Well, I think it’s finally time for me to announce my departure from Suimasen Scans…

For six weeks.

I’ll be spending the next 6 weeks in Montana, wrestling bears, getting electrocuted, drowning, collecting FELDSPAR, and all the fun stuff that comes along with being at camp. I originally had a giant release lined up to celebrate my going away, but since the people responsible for a couple of the chapters aren’t around, so I’ll just post what I’ve got so far.

Hopefully, sly or someone will be along in the morning so they can tack on the missing releases to this post or something. Here’s to hoping they show up soon.

In the off chance we get to release #200 (something baka-updates tells us we’re fast approaching), I’d like to thank all the workers who invested untold numbers of hours working on BACKGROUNDS, FIGHTAN LOLIS, DROWNING LIFEGUARDS, and all the other fun stuff that we’ve worked on over the last two years.

Anyway, that’s it from me until August, and I hope our readers enjoy their summers as much as I’ll be enjoying mine. Have a good one, everybody.

Collision Course (Tokkyuu 11)

by slyborg

Ganbatte Kaijō Hoan-chō!

As the recent tragic events have shown, for a maritime nation like Japan, the safety of those at sea is a paramount concern. The Japan Coast Guard 海上保安庁 Kaijō Hoan-chō commands great respect there, and Hyougo Kanbayashi serves as crew on one of its 121 patrol vessels. The unit he wishes to join, Tokkyuu, is an acronym for 特殊救難隊 Tokushu Kyūnan Tai the elite Special Rescue Team. From Wikipedia “The latest use of the SRT’s skills was to carry out the search for people during the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Large numbers of the team worked near and in the Fukushima nuclear power plant.”

In this chapter, Hyougo spots a suspicious vessel and convinces the captain to allow him to investigate. This leads to the realization that something bad may have happened to Yuri’s ship…

The Old Man & The Sea (Tokkyuu 10)

by slyborg

That can't be good...

Things start to go wrong in a hurry as the storm generates high seas and boats attempt to reach the safety of the harbor, and Yuri is suddenly faced with terrible responsibilities… It starts going down in earnest at the end of vol. 2 and the first real test of Hyougo’s determination is coming up.

I like Mitsurou Kubo’s art work in Tokkyuu!!, you get a real feel for the claustrophobic feeling of being in close quarters underwater. Fun fact: Kubo-sensei is actually a woman…
